SC Updates for January, 1999

Tournaments being started
1-31-99: For the last week or so, there's been discussion at sc-talk about tournaments.
First to announce was Kevin McDermott, who set up a tournament page to track his progress. He wrote later that his tournament was full and would start in about a month.
Then Zach Bush announced he was looking for people to play a tournament, which still has openings.
Neither organizer e-mailed Stellar Crisis Room to announce, so these may be private tournaments. But I thought I'd share them with the nearly 1,000 visitors a day that view the rooms.

Lysator server returns
1-30-99: The Lysator servers, after being down for a while, appear to be back and running. Sorry for lag - servers were reported up Friday - but hotmail had a roll back and I could only get the messages today.

GameStats announces Half-Life contest
1-26-99: A Dressed to Kill contest just started featuring Half-Life. GameStats is giving away seven sets of goodies which include a copy of Half-Life, a special embroidered Half-Life baseball cap, a cool Half-Life T-shirt, and a special Dressed To Kill certificate! In all, seven lucky people will win packages containing all of these prizes!
Check out GameStats' Half-Life Contest Page. There are two neat graphics to go with the contest - A and B.

Game availability open 24 hours/day
1-19-99: Thanks to Andy Graves, Lugdunum, the game availability program is now available any time. Andy sent Agt a long cord so that the server could be re-located from the bedroom, where it was turned off at night, to the bathroom. Now he just has to be careful taking a shower.

Test reveals the true SC player in you!
1-16-99: So you want to know what kind of Stellar Crisis player you really are, eh? Well, try the Intergalactic Explorer Test. It's for anyone who is into Sci-Fi, Star Trek, Star Wars and other futuristic settings. The Bird tested as an Entrepreneur (I do so admire the Ferengi).

Katuluu brings back SC Awards!
1-14-99: Katuluu invites everyone to put in a vote in his new SC Awards. You can't vote for yourself (darn!), you can only vote once and you can't send threatening e-mails to Kat. But you can send him suggestions for new categories or for improvements.

Another bulletin board started!
1-9-99: Smurfs started a Stellar Crisis bulletin board.

Shadowfactor gains Voxware license !
1-13-99: An exclusive from GameStats was the recent announcement of Shadowfactor Software (SS) for a license that allows voice over IP software in games.

SS, developers of Battlefield Communicator, closed a deal with Voxware to license "the best voice compression technology in the world for this type of application."

This new technology - no more typing commands - will be part of Battlefield Communicator version 1.2.

Another bulletin board started!
1-9-99: Smurfs started a Stellar Crisis bulletin board.

Red Hat adds Big Orange server
1-8-99: Red Hat announced his new server, Big Orange, with version 2.8.6. There are two unique games offered so far. Head on over, see if you can bomb his computer with the 200-system game.

Lysator upgraded
1-2-99: Peter Bortas announced that he has upgraded Lysator server to version 2.8.5beta3. Several bugs have been announced since then, including a possible problem with moving cloakers.
